Frank Hockney Drum Teacher Oxford
'Ever thought about learning to play the drums?'
I've been a drum teacher for many years and have recently taken on more pupils as I'm drumming/teaching full time. I teach everyone from absolute beginners to experienced drummers looking to add new styles and techniques to their playing.
A quick summary of what I can offer would be:
Ages:
Any age! It's never too early/late to start. Any youngster getting their first kit should at least get some basic instruction to avoid falling into hard to get out of habits....like I did!
Styles taught:
Jazz, rock, funk, latin/AfroCuban
As you can hear from my jukebox, my style leans towards jazz but probably my favourite drummers are rock players.
My own practice routines are based around funk rudiments because these tend to add technique and precision to my playing.
The Afro/Cuban rhythms are real exercises in 4 limb independance and are great fun (but difficult) to play.
Teaching methods:
This is always tailored to the individual but I tend to emphasise rudiments being used in a groove/rhythm situation. Practice pads are fine but the complete kit is the real thing. I teach the Trinity Guildhall Drum Grades if required and have a 100% pass record.
I keep a record of areas covered during lessons and email this to the student along with supporting Mp3 files.
Also I can teach drum music reading if required. It's best to have a basic knowledge of this in case of ever wanting to join Big bands or become a studio drummer.
Facilities:
I have a fully sound insulated small drum studio where I have two kits set up. I like the pupil to be playing for the complete lesson if possible! I also have multitrack recording facilties so we can record the pupil playing, let them take the recording home and listen at home.

Where to have the lessons?
Either in my drum studio in Kennington, Nr Oxford or at your home.
Pricing:
£20 per 45min session or £25 per 1hr session. If taught at your home there is no extra charge if reasonably local or if your further away, we can always work something out.
